Felt making was once a major textile industry in Britain. but today there is virtually no sign that it ever existed. This book documents the rise of the felt industry from its early beginnings in the early nineteenth century to its eventual collapse a few years before the new millenium. However, it is not just a history it explains in detail how felt was made commercially and what the precise conditions were to make the best felt. The book also covers the social aspects of the industry with portraits of the personalities who shaped the course of events. Much of the content is original and has never been published before and gives a unique insight into how felt making was conducted in Britain and the impact it made on everyday products. Technical aspects of making felt are dealt with in a way that is accessible to everyone, without the need for any prior knowledge. The book is aimed at anyone with an interest in felt, including textile historians, or craft felt makers who want to commercialise their creations.

Peter Walter B.Sc., MCIM Over a period of twenty five years in the textile industry, Peter has worked for some of the largest textile companies in the United Kingdom. He has first hand experience of most textile processes from the spinning and processing of synthetic fibres to the production of woven and pile fabrics. Of all the manufacturing techniques he worked on, the production of felt made the greatest impression on him, so much so that his subsequent researches led to the creation of this book. He was the technical manager for Bury and Masco Industries Limited, the largest felt manufacturer in Britain and when this company merged with two other feltmakers to form Bury Cooper Whitehead Limited he became the marketing manager. From here he joined Bonar Textiles Limited as Marketing Director promoting polypropylene into new end uses. Peter later opted to help other businesses and became a business consultant working for Scottish Enterprise, the United Kingdom's Government's economic development organisation for Scotland. After twelve years of advising on business strategy Peter retired and now lives in Cambridgeshire with his wife Liz.
