About The Book

Zu den gro en Gestalten, die die Mathematik der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts geformt haben, gehört Karl Weierstra . Ihm war ein langes Leben geschenkt (1815-1897), und er hat, obwohl erst spät in eine entsprechende Stelle gekommen, einen gro en Kreis von Mathematikern unmittelbar beeinflu t. Heute ist keine Grundvorlesung zur Analysis denk- bar, ohne da sein Name in Verbindung mit fundamentalen Theorien genannt wird. Das rechtfertigt es, da seiner zum 150. Geburtstag im Kreise von Fachgenossen gedacht wurde. Karl Weierstra stammt aus Westfalen. Seine mathematische Ausbildung bekam er - soweit er nicht Autodidakt war - vor allem an der theologisch- philosophischen Akademie in Münster. Dort wurde auch seine hohe Be- gabung erkannt. Das waren die Gründe zu den Weierstra feiern, die in Münster und der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf veranstaltet wurden. Die Vorträge, die dort gehalten wurden, und die Manuskripte, die bei dieser Gelegenheit eingingen, werden hiermit im Auftrage der Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Forschung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen veröffentlicht.
