Jahrhunderts eine vergleichbare Rolle zum heutigen Fernsehen. Seine Wirkungsweise ist eine zu diesem Zeitpunkt einzigartige: Emotional stark ansprechende und schnell ablaufende Bilder, welche dem unerfahrenen Zuschauer kaum die Möglichkeit lassen, das Gesehene rational zu verarbeiten; Aufnahmen und Erzählungen, denen ungeachtet ihres fiktiven Charakters eine sofortige Glaubwürdigkeit zuteilwird. Bereits im ersten Weltkrieg wird man sich dieser mächtigen Waffe bewusst und ebnet anhand erster filmischer Propagandaversuche den Weg für eine effiziente Massenbeeinflussung aller Schichten. Auch das nationalsozialistische Regime zeigt sich begeistert wie ehrfürchtig vor den Möglichkeiten des Films. Ab der Machtergreifung arbeitet der Staat aktiv am Ausbau des Filmsektors und der Errichtung vielerlei filmspezifischer Organe, die umfassende Kontrolle ebenso wie politischen Mehrwert garantieren sollen. Doch wie gestaltete sich die politische Nutzung des Mediums Film im Dritten Reich? Diese Fragestellung soll den Leitfaden der vorliegenden Arbeit bilden. Dazu sollen im ersten Schritt die Entwicklung und Bedeutung des neuen Mediums Film bis hin zur Machtergreifung erläutert werden. Weiterhin werden eine allgemeine Begriffsklärung sowie Funktionsweisen der Zensur und Filmzensur folgen. Der Filmgebrauch im Dritten Reich soll anhand seiner Akteure, Institutionen und aktiven Rechtslage umrissen werden, zuletzt wird auf die Bedeutung von Filmpropaganda, insbesondere auf die Wochenschau eingegangen.
