The notion of FIVE CENT RETURN began with the treatment of horses at the killer auctions, and the story progressed into discussing prejudice as found in all races and societies. Because the main character is both Lakota and Welsh, he cannot be easily typecast; those who come up against him either hate him for his color or are able to look past that color into a stranger's heart. The journey is a sexual awakening for Joe Evans as well as the eventual rehabilitation of a rogue horse, while the pair walk across the country. Joe Evans is determined to return the horse to his grandfather's ranch, and the year-long journey reawakens the soul of an isolated man.

Born in New England, William Albert Luckey has always been intrigued by horses. Luckey moved West to work with horses and write stories about them, and the fascinating characters involved with these great animals. Eventing, dressage, working cattle, five-day trail rides, and most of all fox-hunting for 20 seasons have given Luckey a well-rounded confidence with horses. "I found out I had a way with reworking spoiled or abused horses, before all the 'horse whisperer' talk. I had researched the late 1800s to read about John Rarey, the first well-documented 'horse whisperer'. Others, like Henry Blake and Kell Jeffries shared their ideas, and by putting together what worked for me, I was able to reclaim horses that otherwise would have gone to slaughter.' The current story, FIVE CENT RETURN, is about a discarded man and his intentions to save an abused horse, and how the company of a horse can change a human life. Luckey's first book, HIGH LINE RIDER, came out in 1985.
