Entwicklung des Flugwesens und der Fluglehre, Rekordtabelle 1. Bis zum. ersten Motorflug. Dem Franzosen ALPHONSE PENAUD gluckte um das Jahr 1870 die Entdeckung, daB ein Flugzeug, um in der Langsrichtung stabil zu sein, nur einer geeigneten Schwanz- flosse - Dampfungsflache - bedarf. Er fand auch, daB die seitliche Unstabilitat durch Aufbiegen oder Aufwartskrummen der Trag- flachen vermindert wird. Am 18. August 1871lieB er vor Zeugen ein durch gespannte Gummizuge betriebenes Flugzeugmodell frei fliegen. Dies war der erste Flug eines "kunstlichen Vogels". Wenige Jahre daraufnahm sich PENAUD, 30 Jahre alt, aus Krankung uber die Nichtbeachtung seiner Erfindung das Leben. Der Deutsche OTTO LILIENTHAL entdeckte um 1890, daB ge- wOlbte Tragfiiigel ebenen Flachen an Tragkraft bedeutend iiber- legen seien. Er suchte der Losung des Flugproblems dadurch naher zu kommen, daB er Tragfliigel am eigenen Korper befestigte und in dieser Weise von kleinen Anhohen aus Gleit-und Schwebeversuche ausfiihrte. Nach zahlreichen wohlgelungenen Versuchen fand er durch Absturz am 11. August 1896 seinen Tod.
