Gleichzeitig deckt sie die unterschiedlichen Formen der Auserwähltheit des Helden auf. Diese äu ern sich in spezifischen Merkmalen, durch welche sich die Heldenfigur von den übrigen Figuren der Diegese unterscheidet. Anschlie end wird ein Ansatz zur Einordnung der "Wiedergeburt" in den kulturellen Kontext ihrer Entstehungszeit präsentiert, welcher die Auserwähltheit des Helden als eine Kompensationsform von in der Entstehungskultur bestehenden Absenzen versteht. Die Arbeit orientiert sich an den umfangreichen Forschungsergebnissen Marianne Wünschs auf dem Gebiet der fantastischen Literatur der Frühen Moderne 1890-1930. Der untersuchte Text weist einen recht komplexen Aufbau auf. Er verfolgt die Geschicke des Helden über zwei Inkarnationen hinweg. Den grö ten Teil des Romans machen die Memoiren Sennon Voraufs aus, eines um die Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert lebenden Mannes. Sie enthalten seine Erinnerungen an ein früheres, auf das 18 Jh. zu datierende Leben unter dem Namen Melchior Dronte sowie darüber hinaus eine Beschreibung seines gegenwärtigen Lebens bis zum Ausbruch des ersten Weltkriegs. Diese Ausführungen Voraufs sind um Briefe und Berichte ihm nahestehender Personen ergänzt, die dessen Leben vor und während des Krieges aus ihrer Sicht dokumentieren.
