Les articles réunis dans le présent recueil représentent l'aspect le plus « original peut-être - le plus déconcertant aussi pour nombre de lecteurs - de l'oeuvre de René Guénon. On aurait pu l'intituler Fragments d'une histoire inconnue, mais d'une histoire qui englobe protohistoire et préhistoire puisqu'elle commence avec la Tradition primordiale contemporaine des débuts de la présente humanité. Ce sont des fragments destinés à demeurer tels en ce sens qu'il eût été sans doute impossible à Guénon lui-même de présenter cette histoire de manière continue et sans lacunes car les sources traditionnelles qui lui en ont fourni les éléments étaient vraisemblablement multiples. Ce sont des fragments aussi en un autre sens car on n'a pu réunir ici que les textes non encore incorporés dans de précédents volumes soit par Guénon lui-même, soit par les compilateurs de recueils posthumes déjà publiés.

Dans les textes qu'on va lire, c'est surtout ce qui touche à l'Hyperborée et à l'Atlantide qui sera une pierre d'achoppement pour certains, car presque tout ce qui en est dit se trouve à contre-courant des idées qui prévalent, en général, dans le monde scientifique occidental. Les points de convergence seraient, croyons-nous, plus nombreux avec les résultats de la recherche scientifique dans le monde soviétique; mais ceux-ci sont trop imparfaitement connus ici pour qu'on puisse utilement en faire état. D'ailleurs, étant donné le caractère préhistorique évident des époques auxquelles nous reportent les traditions hyperboréenne et atlantéenne, on ne saurait évoquer que des indices, au mieux quelques faisceaux d'indices, la plupart se situant dans les domaines de l'ethnographie, de la linguistique comparée et des religions. C'est ainsi qu'on pourrait mentionner la communauté de certains rites, la parenté plus ou moins étroite de plusieurs autres, en particulier de la circoncision pratiquée des deux côtés de l'Atlantique.
