In questo libro l'autore tratta dei due oggetti del pensiero costituiti dall'Essere e dal mondo, e della posizione che l'uomo occupa in relazione ad essi. In esso si afferma una differenza assoluta fra il mondo, in cui l'uomo si trova a esistere, e l'Essere. Ciò comporta che il mondo né è l'Essere, né ha un fondamento nell'Essere; perciò, ogni movimento del pensiero che dal mondo conduca al rinvenimento di un senso ultimo del mondo che sia ad esso interno, o all'accertamento di una sua assenza di senso, oppure a un principio spirituale - sia ad esso esterno, sia ad esso immanente - che costituisca l'origine di un suo senso, non arriva a comprendere l'Essere in sé. Il mondo, poiché non è Essere, è il nulla. In questo nulla si muove l'uomo.
Tuttavia, l'unico luogo in cui si possa dare una conoscenza dell'Essere è l'uomo stesso - e ciò perché nell'uomo è qualcosa dell'Essere - perché l'uomo, nella sua profondità interiore, è il portatore della sua parte di Essere, la quale è della stessa natura dell'Essere in sé. Nel percorso che collega in questo modo la parte al tutto, l'io dell'uomo ritrova la sua vera origine in ciò che non ha mai posto alcunché, che non ha mai creato alcunché, che non è mai differente da sé. Nel processo di rinvenimento della vera posizione di sé da parte dell'io, quest'ultimo conquista così la consapevolezza della propria condizione assoluta e inamovibile nell'Essere, assieme alla coscienza della potenza infinita con cui l'Essere permane costantemente in se stesso.
Allo stesso tempo, la condizione dell'io di essere esistente nel mondo impone al pensiero di pensare l'Essere come un passato da cui l'io è stato separato. Tuttavia, nel radicamento dell'io nell'Essere è la comprensione che tale separazione è costantemente superata, cancellata, negata dall'Essere stesso. Nonostante il nulla del mondo, di cui l'uomo si trova ad esser parte, l'autore giunge così ad affermare che il nulla non può nulla sull'io che, rinvenendo la propria radice nell'Essere, sull'Essere fissa il suo sguardo e in esso ritrova la sua dimora.
