Mit zeitlicher Verzögerung zu anderen Wirtschaftszweigen begann jedoch auch im Handel die Internationalisierung. Während Handelsunternehmen beschaffungsseitig seit einigen Jahrzehnten als Global Player auftreten, ist eine absatzorientierte Internationalisierung erst verstärkt seit Anfang der achtziger Jahre zu beobachten. Vor dem Hintergrund der zunehmenden Internationalisierung und der damit verbundenen Intensivierung des Wettbewerbs sind Handelsunternehmen gezwungen ihre Aktivitäten nicht nur auf den Heimatmarkt zu begrenzen, sondern im Rahmen von Internationalisierungsstrategien eine systematische Auslandsmarktbearbeitung zu betreiben. Hat sich ein Einzelhandelsunternehmen für eine Internationalisierung entschieden, so stellt sich die Frage welche Strategien im Hinblick auf die Erreichung der Unternehmensziele verfolgt werden sollen. Von besonderer Bedeutung im Rahmen der strategischen Gestaltung der Internationalisierung ist die Wahl der Markteintrittsform. Eine mögliche Organisationsform der Gestaltung grenzüberschreitender Aktivitäten stellt Franchising dar. Im Zeichen der Globalisierung gewinnt Franchising sowohl national als auch international zunehmend an Bedeutung. Es ist die weltweit am stärksten wachsende unternehmerische Organisationsform. So stieg die Anzahl der Franchise-Systeme in Deutschland im Zeitraum von 1995 bis 2005 um 64 Prozent. Im gleichen Zeitraum verzeichnete die deutsche Franchise-Branche ein Umsatzwachstum von 170 Prozent. Wie erfolgreich eine Internationalisierung mittels Franchising sein kann, illustriert insbesondere das Beispiel Benneton.
