Frank Borzage et Budd Boetticher sont des maîtres qui sont toujours restés à l'arrière-plan des genres auxquels ils se sont consacrés. Borzage a été le principal créateur de mélodrames à la fin des années 1920 et tout au long des années 1930, mais il n'a jamais obtenu la reconnaissance que Douglas Sirk, un autre maître du genre, méritait si justement. Il est resté en position d'infériorité et on ne se souvient plus guère de lui aujourd'hui, tout comme John M. Stahl, qui s'est consacré au genre, a réalisé des films qui ont fait l'objet de nouvelles versions par Sirk lui-même, mais qui est aujourd'hui tombé dans l'oubli. Ils restent des précurseurs, mais pas des maîtres et, par conséquent, la valeur extraordinaire de films comme Seventh Heaven et The Angel of the Streets tend à être oubliée. Quant à Budd Boetticher, la reconnaissance de la critique française - André Bazin a été le premier à évaluer correctement ses mérites - n'a pas suffi à le sortir du second rang par rapport à des noms comme John Ford, Howard Hawks ou Anthony Mann.
