Filme können also dem Historiker oder Sozialwissenschaftler eine nützliche Plattform bieten, von der aus ein Blick auf die kulturellen und politischen Gegebenheiten einer Gesellschaft oder einer Zeitperiode geworfen werden kann. Die Bond-Filme ermöglichen diesen Blick auf über vierzig Jahre Zeitgeschichte und sind es daher Wert, ernst genommen zu werden. Das vorliegende Buch macht es sich nun zur Aufgabe, die James Bond-Filme im Zeitraum von 1962 bis 2006 auf die Aspekte Frauen, Politik und Action hin zu untersuchen, wobei letzterer Punkt nur marginal betrachtet wird. Das Erkenntnisinteresse liegt hierbei auf zwei Hauptthemen. Zum Einen stellt sich die Frage nach der Einordnung der Filme in ihren zeithistorischen Kontext. Wie viel Politisches steckt in ihnen und wie wurden sie von der Kritik aufgenommen? Zum Anderen thematisiert die Untersuchung die Rolle der Frauen in den James Bond-Filmen. Der Agent ist ebenso bekannt für seine Liebe zum weiblichen Geschlecht, wie für seinen Verschlei desselben. Wie werden also die Bond-Girls in den Filmen repräsentiert? Sind sie tatsächlich nur die zu Dekorationszwecken dienenden Opfer männlicher Begierde oder steckt hinter ihrem Auftreten mehr als nur "die Frau als Lustobjekt"? Neben diesen zwei Hauptthemen der Studie bietet ein allgemeiner Teil zunächst einen kurzen Überblick über das Phänomen James Bond in seiner Gesamtheit. Kurz besprochen werden unter anderem die Entstehungsgeschichte der Figur James Bond, das Set-Design der Filme, die "Bond-Formel" sowie Product Placement und Merchandise-Produkte. Im Anhang finden sich erstmals den Inhalt der Filme betreffende Sequenzprotokolle zu allen offiziellen Bond-Produktionen, die bis 2006 erschienen sind.
