In den modernen Sozialwissenschaften, vor allem in der Ethnologie und der Anthropologie, als auch der Religionswissenschaft findet dieser Satz heutzutage seine Bestätigung. Paul Reiwald bezeichnet diesen Satz auch als jenen, der Bronislaw Malinowski in seiner wissenschaftlichen Persönlichkeit am besten verkörpert. Malinowskis Arbeit setzte hohe Anforderungen voraus, um Theorie und Praxis miteinander zu verbinden. Er verbrachte einen Gro teil seiner Forschungen und Studien hauptsächlich bei den Trobriandern in Neu-Guinea und in West-Melanesien. Da erforschte er vor Ort die fremde Kultur und verglich sie mit Elementen seiner eigenen, um durch die Vertraulichkeit dieser letztendlich die fremden und ungewohnten Elemente zu entdecken. Er verglich das Erlernen einer fremden Kultur mit dem Erlernen einer fremden Sprache: "... zunächst blo es Sich-Anpassen und rohes Übersetzen, schlie lich ein vollkommenes Sich-Loslösen von der ursprünglichen Sprachwelt und wirkliches Beherrschen der neuen." Diese vertrauten Hinweise mussten also als Ausgangspunkte für eine gute ethnographische Arbeit dienen. Damit gab sich Malinowski jedoch nicht zufrieden und versuchte immer wieder der Ethnologie eine Grundlage zu geben, in dem er seine sogenannte 'funktionale Theorie′ entwickelte. Malinowski versuchte die Psychologie (hier die Psychoanalyse) und die Ethnologie zu verknüpfen, was man in seiner Untersuchung "Mutterrecht und Oedipuskomplex" sehen kann. Er verband die Rechtswissenschaft mit der Ethnologie in "Crime and punishment in Savage Society".
