In der vorliegenden Hausarbeit soll daher untersucht werden, wie diese Leitlinien im heutigen Summerhill umgesetzt werden. Dabei stehen besonders folgende Fragen im Mittelpunkt: Wie ist der Unterricht organisiert? Welche Freiheiten werden den Schülern tatsächlich gegeben? Welche Lern- und Freizeitangebote gibt es? Wie funktioniert das demokratische Zusammenleben? Und welche Rolle nehmen Erwachsene in Summerhill ein? Das Ziel der Untersuchungen ist es zudem, das Schulkonzept nicht nur vorzustellen, sondern es ebenso einer kritischen Betrachtung zu unterziehen, indem dessen Chancen wie auch Grenzen erläutert werden. Im Jahr 1921 wurde Summerhill in einem Vorort von Dresden gegründet, damals als eine Abteilung der reformpädagogischen "Neuen Schule Hellerau". Unzufrieden mit der dortigen Schulleitung machte sich der Gründer Alexander Sutherland Neill kurze Zeit später zunächst im österreichischen Sonntagsberg selbstständig, zog dann mit seiner Schule nach Lyme Regis und letztlich 1927 nach Leiston (Suffolk) um, wo sie sich bis heute befindet. Neill revolutionierte mit Summerhill die Idee einer zwanglosen, am Kind orientierten Erziehung, indem er die Unterrichtspflicht aufhob und den Schülern weitreichende Selbst- sowie Mitbestimmungsrechte einräumte. Dies stie zwar bei einigen Pädagogen auf Begeisterung, auf der anderen Seite wurde Neills Erziehungskonzept aber ebenso kritisiert. Die langen Auseinandersetzungen mit der britischen Regierung erreichten im März 1999 ihren Höhepunkt, als staatliche Schulinspektoren mit der Schlie ung der Alternativschule drohten.
