Der erste Roman brachte ihm eine Duellforderung, der letzte einen Platz in der Literaturgeschichte. Fritz Gerhard Lottmann, der 1880 in Emden geboren wurde und 1918 in Oldenburg an der Spanischen Grippe verstarb, wurde nur 37 Jahre alt. Zum Landmesser ausgebildet, irrlichterte der kaiserkritische Freigeist zunächst als verspäteter Abiturient, als Versicherungsagent für Pferde und als spät promovierter Landwirt durchs Deutsche Reich, bis ihn ein Ruf nach Montevideo fast auswandern lie . Mit humoristischen Staatjes konnte der Ostfriese ganze Auditorien von den Stühlen rei en, nur leben lie sich davon nicht. Als Fachmann für die Kultivierung von Moorflächen engagierte er sich bei der Lösung der Sozialen Frage. Im Gro herzogtum Oldenburg fand Lottmann mit seiner privaten Realschule, dem "Pädagogium" 1913 endlich eine persönliche Heimat. Das Erscheinen seines weltanschaulich geprägten Romans "Dat Hus sünner Lücht" und den Nachruhm als Schriftsteller sollte er nicht mehr erleben. Im Gegensatz zu Heimatdichtern wie Gorch Fock, dessen extrem nationalistische Tonlage zu fragwürdigem Ruhm unter den Nazis führte, zeichnet sich Lottmanns Werk durch Werte wie Freiheit und Toleranz aus. Wo sonst findet man in der Heimatliteratur der Jahrhundertwende Bemühungen, eine uneheliche italienische Gastarbeiterin in Ostfriesland zu integrieren? Wo sonst findet man Juden als Vorbilder anstatt als Zielscheibe von Rassimus und Antisemitismus? Die Scholle, das heimatliche Stück Erde, ist beim liberalen Lottmann kein Vorläufer von Blut und Boden, sondern landwirtschaftliches Asyl vor den Zumutungen des Gottesgnadentums. Statt eines kolonialistischen "Volks ohne Raum" findet man Landwirte, die das Moor fachgerecht entwässern und urbar machen. In seiner Kirchenkritik von der Entmystifizierung des Glaubens geprägt, bleibt Lottmann jedoch dem Humanismus des Christentums verpflichtet - ein spannendes, kurzes Leben, mit Werten, die auch heute noch Geltung beanspruchen können.
