"From the River" is a haunting, lyrical poetry collection by Jason Jordan; a raw, mythic journey through the American South, framed as a descent into and brief escape from the underworld.

Blending personal memoir, road-trip narrative, and classical mythology, the book follows a small family - the narrator (a fragile, anxious shade), his fiercely capable wife ("SHE"), and their adopted charge ("HE") - as they leave a decaying, coin-hungry Hades and cross the Mississippi River into a fleeting "land of the living" for a vibrant festival (a modern Bacchanal), all too soon to return. Each poem is titled in ancient Greek, giving the everyday an epic, ritualistic weight.

Jason Jordan writes in a dense, image-rich poetic prose that feels both ancient and contemporary. The language is visceral, sometimes grotesque, and often beautiful.

The narrator's voice is that of a wandering spirit - physically unwell, mentally burdened, deeply observant, and in awe of his wife's strength. Themes of death and rebirth, family as salvation, mental health struggles, consumerism, decay, and the thin border between life and living death run throughout.

The book is organized into short sections with Greek titles and their English meaning, each accompanied by a striking, often surreal or color-treated photograph. These images - burning houses, shadowy figures, neon-soaked scenes, abstract textures - function as visual poems that deepen the text rather than merely illustrate it.
