Diese Studie leistet zunächst eine umfassende Darstellung des aktuellen Forschungsstandes zum Thema "Funktionsverbgefüge". Nach einer Auflistung der wichtigsten Kriterien und einer darauf aufbauenden Definition, folgt eine gro angelegte Datensammlung und Frequenzanalyse anhand aufwendiger Internet- und Korpusrecherchen, u. a. im TIGER- und im DWDS-Korpus. Es folgt die Klassifizierung von mehr als 2000 extrahierten deutschen Funktionsverbgefügen nach ihrer Paraphrasierbarkeit. Hierbei wird die Gesamtmenge der extrahierten Daten in acht Äquivalenzklassen eingeteilt. Besonders wichtig erscheinen hierbei die Klassen der "Basisverben" (im Aktiv oder auch im Passiv), der "Basisadjektive" und der "Basissubstantive" (mit Kopula "sein" oder "werden"). Diese Arten der Paraphrasierung dürften nämlich für verschiedenste NLP- Anwendungen wichtig und nützlich sein. Auf einige Probleme bei der semantischen Auswertung und beim Transfer von Funktionsverbgefügen im Rahmen der Maschinellen Übersetzung (MÜ) wird in einem Extrakapitel eingegangen. Das Computerlexikon HaGenLex wird in einem Exkurs kurz beschrieben, ebenso die Transformation einer Auswahl von ca. 450 Funktionsverbgefügen in eine Vorstufe von Lexikoneinträgen im HaGenLex anhand eines hierfür entwickelten Java-Programms. Dass Funktionsverbgefüge kein speziell deutsches, sondern offenbar ein universelles Sprachphänomen sind, wird in einem Extrakapitel ausführlich dargestellt und anhand zahlreicher Beispiele aus anderen Sprachen belegt.

Nach dem Studium der Romanistik, der klassischen Philologie, der Informatik und Mathematik (mit dem Studienschwerpunkt künstliche Intelligenz) an den Universitäten München, Nantes und Hagen, bildete sich die Autorin zunächst im Bereich der Computerlinguistik weiter. Hierbei stand die Beschäftigung mit der Korpuslinguistik im Vordergrund. Seit 2010 erstellt die Autorin eine Datenbank deutscher Funktionsverbgefüge und Idiome sowie deren Paraphrasen. Diese Datenbank mit aktuell weit über 60.000 Datensätzen kann als lexikografische Ressource verschiedenste Anwendungsbereiche wie z. B. Übersetzungssoftware, Plagiaterkennungssoftware, Information Retrieval, Frage-Antwort-Systeme, Controlled Language, Autorenunterstützung Technische Kommunikation und nicht zuletzt DaF(Deutsch als Fremdsprache)-Unterrichtsmethoden ergänzend unterstützen.
