Further from the Madding Crowd is a contemporary re-telling of Hardy's classic romance, 'Far from the Madding Crowd'. Many of the social issues Hardy championed have been largely resolved, but the romantic element remains as powerful as ever. The setting is a fictional Peak District rather than Wessex. The story relates the romantic pursuit of the beautiful but vain, Tara Beaumont-Smith by three disparate admirers. The serious and reliable Joshua Latham, the wily charmer, Bradley King and the local businessman and country gent, Theodore Walklate, all vie for Tara's attention. Set against the backdrop of family businesses, the hospitality industry and management consultancy, a story unfolds of deception, intrigue, unrequited passion and the frailties of human emotions.

Thorne, Nick: - Nick Thorne is a Chartered Engineer, Metallurgist and until recent retirement was the Managing Director of a primary tin smelter in Thailand. Whilst this is perhaps not the usual background for an author of romantic fiction, Nick is an avid follower of classic works of English literature, particularly those of Thomas Hardy. Retirement has now given the time and opportunity to fulfil an ambition to bring one of those classics a modern makeover, moving the story from a fictional Wessex to a fictional Derbyshire. Nick is able to draw on his experience of previously having lived and worked in both Dorset and Derbyshire to add credibility to his writing. He is married with two grown up children and three grandchildren, and currently lives in Somerset.
