Hans-Georg Gadamer schaffte eine vormethodisch und ontologisch ausgerichtete philosophische Hermeneutik. Hermeneutik ist die Kunst und Lehre der Auslegung von Schriften und Kunstwerken. Auch das Verstehen von Menschen, was nach Gadamer nur durch das Gespräch zum Erfolg führen kann, ist Teil der Hermeneutik. Um ein Verständnis davon zu bekommen, was Gadamer mit der 'Universalität von Hermeneutik' meint, wird ein Einblick gegeben, wie beispielsweise das Geschichtsverständnis das menschliche Leben beeinflusst. Die hermeneutische Reflexion dient der Entdeckung der Bedingungen und Grenzen der Wissenschaft. Sie deckt Wahrheitsbedingungen auf. Diese Arbeit konzentriert sich auf den Bereich der Lyrik. Das Verstehen eines Gedichts erfordert eine Eigenleistung. Das Lesen und Deuten, das 'richtige' Verstehen ist hier Aufgabenstellung. Weist das Dichterwort auf etwas oder steht es in sich da, und will als solches genommen werden? Kann man den Sinn des Gedichts als etwas Verborgenes aufdecken? Oder ist der Sinn gar nicht verborgen? Spricht es für oder gegen ein Gedicht, wenn es in sich verschränkt und verdichtet ist? Hans-Georg Gadamer interpretiert unter anderem Paul Celans Gedichtfolge "Atemkristall", welche 21 Gedichte umfasst. Hierbei geht er nicht nur auf das Gedicht selber ein, sondern bezieht einiges aus seinen hermeneutischen Schriften in die Interpretation mit ein.
