Konkret soll die folgende Fragestellung beantwortet werden: Warum sind Gangs ein attraktiver Zufluchtsort für Jugendliche? Die Arbeit analysiert die Anreize für Jugendliche einer Gang beizutreten und dort auch für eine längere Zeit zu verbleiben. Zunächst wird hierfür allgemein das Thema Jugendgang behandelt, Charakteristiken und Merkmale werden definiert. Im Anschluss daran werden der Strukturtypus und die Hierarchie der Gangs genauer betrachtet. Daraufhin wird Bezug auf die Rekrutierung neuer Mitglieder genommen, da diese im Alltag vieler Jugendlichen eine erhebliche Rolle spielt. Des Weiteren wird die Gruppensoziologie genauer analysiert und Gemeinsamkeiten und Differenzen zwischen den Gangs und Gruppen herausgearbeitet. Daraufhin folgt ein empirischer Teil, der sich der Gang der maras widmet. Kriminelle Jugendgangs sind ein weit verbreitetes Problem und dennoch wird es wenig thematisiert und diskutiert, da vor allem in den letzten 20 Jahren die Forschung zu Jugendgangs deutlich abgenommen hat. Das Problem ist jedoch noch immer so präsent wie zuvor, da vor allem in Zentralamerika Gangs die Stra en regieren. In Deutschland sind Jugendgangs eher ein kurzfristiges, epochales Phänomen, welches sich oft nach der Adoleszenz auflöst, wenn die Mitglieder erwachsen werden. Die USA hingegen ist am stärksten von der Gang-Problematik betroffen. Hier gibt es tradierte Gangs, die bereits seit Generationen bestehen. Eine Gang ist beispielsweise die mara. Die maras bestehen seit mehreren Jahrzehnten vor allem in Zentralamerika und nehmen ganze Städte ein. Insbesondere in Honduras, Guatemala und El Salvador sind sie stark verbreitet.
