In occasione delle celebrazioni per il 150 anniversario dell'Unit� d'Italia (2010-2011), l'Amministrazione comunale di Sparanise promosse un'accurata ricerca storica su un evento che vide la cittadina protagonista: la sosta di Giuseppe Garibaldi subito dopo il celebre incontro con Vittorio Emanuele II presso Teano, il 26 ottobre 1860.
Invece di seguire il Re per il pranzo, Garibaldi si rec� a Sparanise, dove consum� un'umile colazione a base di pane e cacio nel portico della chiesetta di San Vitaliano .
A distanza di oltre un decennio, e a fronte dell'irreperibilit� della pubblicazione originale del 2010, l'autore riprende e aggiorna la sua ricerca in questa nuova edizione riveduta e corretta.
Il testo mira a documentare con precisione storica l'arrivo di Garibaldi a Sparanise - luogo che, secondo l'ipotesi dell'autore, potrebbe essere stato scelto per motivi strategico-militari data la vicinanza a una fabbrica borbonica di armi bianche - di fatto concludendo l'impresa dei Mille.
L'analisi storiografica � stata ampliata per inquadrare il contesto dalla partenza da Quarto e per evidenziare ulteriori circostanze legate alla scelta di Sparanise come luogo di sosta e pernottamento post-incontro.
L'opera non si limita all'evento garibaldino. L'autore sottolinea l'importanza storica della Chiesetta di San Vitaliano (costruita intorno all'anno 1000) e del suo circondario, fulcro della nascita dell'odierna Sparanise. Curiosamente, la stessa piazza, servita dalla stazione ferroviaria attiva all'epoca di Garibaldi, fu successivamente frequentata da figure chiave della storia repubblicana:
Giuseppe Mazzini vi giunse via treno.
Vi nacque Corrado Graziadei, primo deputato dell'agro caleno e fondatore del Partito Comunista in Terra di Lavoro.
Negli anni '30, ospite di Graziadei, vi soggiorn� Antonio Gramsci.
Nel dopoguerra, lo stesso palazzo ospit� il giovane Giorgio Napolitano.
Questa ripubblicazione si presenta come un pamphlet divulgativo. La prima parte analizza le ragioni storiche che resero inevitabile l'invasione del Regno delle Due Sicilie, evidenziando l'inadeguatezza del governo borbonico di fronte agli scenari internazionali dell'epoca. Un testo che, pur mantenendo rigore nelle fonti, rende omaggio a un luogo intriso di storia risorgimentale e repubblicana.
