Auf Wunsch von Herrn Dr. OSWATITSCH, der nahezu acht Jahre mein Mit- arbeiter am Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut fur Stromungsforschung war, gebe ich gerne seinem Buch tiber Gasdynamik die folgenden Zeilen als Geleitwort mit: Ais ich selbst im Jahre 1904 meine Gottinger Tatigkeit begann, gab es bereits Anfange dieser Wissenschaft. Der Name Gasdynamik war allerdings noch nicht erfunden. Uber ihren Zustand im Jahre 1905 unterrichtet mein Beitrag V 5 b zum Physikband der "Enzyklopadie der mathematischen Wissenschaften"; er tragt den Titel "Uber die stromende Bewegung der Gase und Dampfe". Von dem, was man heutzutage Gasdynamik nennt, ist dort noch sehr wenig zu finden. Es gab altere Ausfuhrungen hieruber in GRASHOF, Theoretische Maschinenlehre (1875) und ZEUNER, Technische Thermodynamik (1900), beide vorzugliche klare Lehrbucher, die unter anderem auch die stromende Bewegung der Gase be- handelten, und es gab vor allem das beriihmte Dampfturbinenbuch von STODOLA, wovon die 3. Auflage 1905 erschie. nen war. Die Stodolaschen Forschungen waren auf diesem damals vollig neuen Gebiet fuhrend gewesen. Von fruher her existier- ten Betrachtungen uber den AusfluB von Druckluft, Dampf und dergleichen unter groBen Druckunterschieden, es existierten aber auch eine Reihe von Ammen- marchen, so z. B. dieses, daB die AusfluBgeschwindigkeit von Gasen und Dampfen niemals die Schallgeschwindigkeit dieser Stoffe uberschreiten konne. Dieses, obwohl Energiebetrachtungen zeigten, daB wesentlich groBere Geschwindigkeiten moglich waren.
