Der Name des Erzahlers, Romanciers und Literaturkritikers ist seit den spaten 50er Jahren eng mit einem Literaturverstandnis verbunden, das sich von realistischen Literaturkonzeptionen, wie sie fur lange Zeit in Agypten und der gesamten arabischen Welt vorherrschend waren, abzugrenzen versuchte.Sein im Konzept der Neuen Sensibilitat zum Ausdruck kommender literaturkritischer Ansatz steht im Zentrum der Untersuchung. Welche Moglichkeiten bieten sich der Literatur jenseits des literarischen Realismus? Welche Rolle spielt der Autor von Texten, die den allwissenden durch einen alles hinterfragenden Erzahler ersetzen? Wie verhalt sich die Konstruktion fiktiver Welten, die nicht mehr beanspruchen, Wirklichkeit' mimetisch widerzuspiegeln, zur Gattung der Autobiographie, die doch traditionell die, Wirklichkeit' des eigenen Lebens zu erzahlen vorgibt? Welche Moglichkeiten bieten sich zeitgenossischen arabischen Autoren wie Harrat, die eigene kulturelle und literarische Tradition fur ihre Poetik fruchtbar zu machen? Und schliesslich: Welche politische Relevanz verbirgt sich hinter dem von Harrat vertretenen Literaturbegriff, der sich des traditionellen Engagements enthalt und stattdessen auf die Subversion der Fiktion setzt?Die sich aus diesen Fragen ergebenden Uberlegungen fuhren zu einer Einordnung seines Werks in den Kontext der arabischen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts, die zugleich den Versuch darstellt, die Geschichte dieser Literatur von einer anderen Seite zu beleuchten und kritisch zu hinterfragen. Durch komparatistisch angelegte Uberlegungen gelingt es, die moderne arabische Literatur aus der Rolle eines exotischen Anderen in die zeitgenossische Wirklichkeit der Weltliteratur zuruckzuholen. So erweist sich der Umschwung von der Litterature Engagee zum Nouveau Roman in Frankreich und die Uberwindung der unmittelbaren Nachkriegsliteratur in Deutschland durch die Autoren der Neuen Innerlichkeit als vergleichbar mit den von Harrat dargestellten Entwicklungen in der arabischen Literatur. Die Ahnlichkeit der literaturkritischen Diskurse legt eine Zeitgenossenschaft nahe, durch die sich das Werk des Alexandriners Harrat in seiner Internationalitat und Offenheit als eine Neubegrundung des levantinischen Kosmopolitismus im Zeitalter der vielzitierten Globalisierung lesen lasst.
