Ce mod�le est utilis� pour g�n�rer un ensemble minimal de paquets de test permettant de tester chaque liaison du r�seau ou chaque r�gle du r�seau. Les paquets de test sont envoy�s p�riodiquement et les d�faillances d�tect�es d�clenchent un m�canisme distinct afin de localiser le d�faut. Ce syst�me peut d�tecter � la fois les probl�mes fonctionnels (par exemple, une r�gle de pare-feu incorrecte) et les probl�mes de performance (par exemple, une file d'attente encombr�e). Il compl�te mais va au-del� des travaux ant�rieurs en mati�re de v�rification statique (qui ne permet pas de distinguer les probl�mes de vivacit� ou d'ex�cution) ou de restriction des d�faillances (qui se contentent de restreindre les d�ficiences en fonction des r�sultats de vivacit�). Il a �t� mis en oeuvre dans deux ensembles de donn�es r�els appel�s Stanford backbone network et internet2 . Les r�sultats sont surprenants, car il a fallu tr�s peu de paquets de test pour v�rifier toutes les r�gles du r�seau.
