Seit Jahren werden Aspekte der Thematik von den Medien aufgegriffen. Trotzdem zeigen Umfragen, dass die wenigsten wissen, was genau Gentechnik ist. Die Akteure der gesellschaftlichen Diskussion verfügen über sehr unterschiedliche Beschreibungen des Sachverhalts, die eigene wird selbstverständlich als die jeweils wahre proklamiert. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der gesellschaftlichen Diskussion über Gentechnik. Das Hauptaugenmerk richtet sich darauf inwieweit es sich bei der Thematik um ein 'soziales Problem' handelt. Nach einer kurzen Darstellung des Begriffsfeldes Gentechnik, von der Geschichte der Genetik bis zu den molekularbiologischen Arbeitstechniken, werden die wichtigsten gegenwärtigen Anwendungsgebiete der Gentechnik in der medizinischen und industriellen Nutzung angerissen. Im Anschluss soll die Frage geklärt werden: Was ist ein soziales Problem? Zur Beantwortung werden die beiden gängigsten Theorien sozialer Probleme, der strukturfunktionalistische und der konstruktivistische Ansatz, herangezogen. Es wird untersucht, welche der beiden Theorien sich besser für die Beschreibung der Gentechnik als soziales Problem eignet. Unter Zuhilfenahme konstruktivistischer Theorien sozialer Probleme wird der Verlauf der öffentlichen Debatte und des kollektiven Definitionsprozesses in Deutschland analysiert und auf die Rollen und Interessen verschiedener gesellschaftlicher Akteure eingegangen. Ziel der Arbeit ist es zu einer realistischeren Einschätzung der Gentechnik und der sozialen Diskussion um selbige zu gelangen.
