Sehr oft. Der demografische Wandel, der seit einiger Zeit in mehr oder weniger allen Industrienationen zu beobachten ist, und die damit einhergehende Zunahme des Anteils alter Menschen zwingen die Gesellschaft zum Umdenken. Bislang war die soziale Fürsorge des Staates sehr stark auf die Jugend ausgerichtet. Dies reicht jedoch nicht mehr aus, denn mit dem Alter einhergehende Behinderungen und Pflegebedürftigkeit können nicht länger übersehen werden. Beide Komponenten steigen in den nächsten Jahrzehnten voraussichtlich überproportional an. In den vergangenen Jahren hat daher ein Arbeitsgebiet zunehmend an Bedeutung gewonnen - die Geriatrie. Doch was ist die Geriatrie genau? Worauf versucht sie konkret Antworten zu finden? Und welche Bedeutung nimmt sie in der Altenhilfe ein? Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Geriatrie als interdisziplinären Ansatz zu beleuchten und ihre Bedeutung in der präventiven und rehabilitativen Arbeit mit alten Menschen herauszustellen. Daher wird eingehend das Bild vom alten Menschen beschrieben, um einen ersten Überblick über Krankheit und Behinderung im Alter zu bekommen. Im Folgenden soll die Geriatrie als methodischer Ansatz in der Altenhilfe vorgestellt werden. Hierbei wird auf wissenschaftliche Grundlagen, Anliegen, Aufgaben und Ziele der Geriatrie eingegangen. Im Folgenden ist die Bedeutung der verschiedenen geriatrischen Berufsfelder zu erörtern, um die Interdisziplinarität dieses Ansatzes zu unterstreichen. Abschlie end ist es Anliegen dieser Arbeit, weiterführende Gedanken und mögliche Aufgaben des Geriaters als interdisziplinär Tätiger zu präsentieren.
