Die Erfolge der naturwissenschaftlichen Medizin haben innerhalb des letz- ten Jahrhunderts die mittlere Lebenserwartung in den Industriestaaten er- heblich erhoht. Fur den einzelnen erlangt damit der AlternsprozeB zuneh- mend Bedeutung, weil die Aussicht besteht, daB er einen beachtlichen An- teil seiner Zeit in fortgeschrittenem Alter leben wird. Zudem hat der medizinische Fortschritt die Alterspyramide der Bevolkerung moderner In- dustriestaaten entscheidend umgeformt und damit gesellschaftspolitische Bedeutung erlangt. Wahrend zum Beispiel urn die Jahrhundertwende der Anteil der jugendlichen Bevolkerungsgruppe bis zu 20 Jahren 46 % und die Gruppe oberhalb der 60er Jahre 7% ausmachten, ist damit zu rechnen, daB im Jahre 1975 die Jugendlichengruppe unter 30 % abgefallen und die Gruppe der alten Menschen dagegen bereits auf 20 % angestiegen sein wer- den, wobei in dieser Schatzung die als beachtlich zu veranschlagende Einwirkung der Pille nicht einmal beriicksichtigt wurde. Damit wird die medizinische, wirtschaftliche, soziale und politische Bedeutung geriatri- scher Probleme fur die Gemeinschaft weiter anwachsen. Alternsprobleme sind keineswegs auf die medizinische Wissenschaft be- schrankt, noch weniger ist die Geriatrie als ein medizinisches Spezialfach anzusehen. Vielmehr muss en geriatrische Gesichtspunkte in vielen, wenn nicht in allen medizinischen Fachern berucksichtigt und ihre Probleme dariiber hinaus auch in nichtmedizinischen Diszipline bearbeitet wer- den. Heute beschaftigen sich viele Kliniken und Institute in aller Welt mit gerontologischen und geriatrischen Fragestellungen, nationale und interna- tionale wissenschaftliche Gesellschaften sowie Zeitschriften wurden ge- griindet, und regelmaBig werden nationale und internationale wissenschaft- liche Veranstaltungen dem Fragenkomplex gewidmet.
