Die Leitmotive der Perfektionierung und Konfrontation machen aus normalen Sportlern mit Hilfe der Medien und des Interesse des Publikums Heldenfiguren. Eben diese Heroen können in verschiedene Varianten und Typen eingeteilt werden, auch wenn die deutliche Positionierung oft ein schwieriger Prozess ist und die Rolle des Helden oft mit der Zeit und Erfolg sowie Misserfolg variiert. Whannel versucht es daher mit der Herangehensweise die Helden in Good Boys, Pretty Boys und Bad Boys einzuteilen, also in den bescheidenen Star, dem klassischen Guten jedes Dramas; in den coolen Schönling, also einen auf das Aussehen heruntergebrochenen Typen; und den ultimativen Alpha, führungsstark aber egozentrisch und nicht das klassische Vorbild. Vande Berg versucht die Heldenfiguren in traditionelle (klassisch männliche körperbetonte) Helden, moderne (vielseitigere) und postmoderne Stars zu sortieren. Letztere haben zur eigentlichen Sportheldenrolle eine soziale Komponente hinzugefügt, welche die Klassifizierung weiter erschwert. Einen dritten Versuch der Einteilung bietet Bette und unterscheidet hierbei in Raum und Zeit, also der Reichweite und der Dauer des Heldendaseins, ein Prozess der durchaus mit dem "Startum" der Musikbranche oder der Schauspielbranche vergleichbar ist. Auf dieser Grundlage werden Abwehrhelden und Eroberer als Gegenpositionen, der Gerechtigkeits- und Racheengel, der Retter und der Erlöser, sowie der Märtyrer und die tragischen Helden unterschieden.
