Lesen Frauen anders? Dieser Frage geht die historisch-empirische Studie für die Zeit um 1800 nach. Bisherige Forschung hat die Existenz klarer, plakativer Polaritäten (weiblich, emotional, identifikatorisch vs. männlich, rational, distanziert etc.) im Lesen postuliert, sich dabei aber entweder nur auf den zeitgenössischen (zumeist von männlicher Feder geführten) Lesesuchtdiskurs gestützt oder von einer sehr schmalen Basis von (vorwiegend weiblichen) Rezeptionszeugnissen aus argumentiert. Dagegen wird hier anhand eines breiten Korpus von verschriftlichten Goethe-Lektüren von Frauen und Männern aus dem gehobenen Bürgertum vergleichend untersucht, ob sich die Kategorie Geschlecht (verstanden im Sinne von Gender) um 1800 als ein den Leseakt bestimmendes Moment nachweisen lä t. Die Studie zeigt, da vieles, was bei alleiniger Betrachtung der Lektüren von Frauen als typisch weiblich erscheint, weil es so treffend die entsprechenden Merkmale des Polaritätsmodells erfüllt, hinsichtlich seiner Geschlechtsspezifität zu relativieren ist, da es sich in den männlichen Lektüren ebenfalls nachweisen lä t. Während das Zwei-Geschlechter-Modell also auf die Lesepraxis nur sehr begrenzt Einflu nimmt, wird es auf der Ebene der Selbstcharakterisierung der eigenen Lektüren vielfach fortgeschrieben. Für die Gestaltung des Leseakts aber gilt, da weitaus gravierendere Unterschiede als die zwischen den Geschlechtern sich zwischen Lesenden desselben Geschlechts finden, andere Faktoren wie etwa poetologische Konzepte eine viel wichtigere Rolle spielen. Geschlecht ist nur ein Einflu faktor unter vielen im Voraussetzungssystem der Lesenden und wird nur unter bestimmten Bedingungen zu einem besonders bedeutsamen.
