STEIN, der Wegbereiter der Erforschung des tibetischen Erzählkom- plex von Geser Khan, hat jüngst in einem Vorwort zu einer geplanten Text- ausgabe der tibetischen Geser-Texte die Bedeutung der mongolischen Ausfor- mungen dieser überlieferung, der man immer mehr bereit ist, einen Platz un- ter den gro en Epen der Weltliteratur einzuräumen, betont, indem er sagte: "But it is in Mongolian that the story has been known for centuries in many versions, written and oral, as in translations or as adaptions, z'n classz'cal writ- ten language or in various dialects, especz'ally Khalkha, Kalmuk and Burz'at" 1 - Siebzig Jahre nachdem die ersten sieben Kapitel des mongolischen Geser- Zyklus als "Buch"-Epos in der Fassung des Pekinger Blockdrucks von 1716 in der Ausgabe und übersetzung durch ISAAK JAKOB SCHMIDT 1836- 2 39 zugänglich und bekannt geworden waren, stellte BERTHOLD LAUFER 1908 die Forderung nach einer Untersuchung der einzelnen Bestandteile die- ser Fassung von 1716, indem er die einheitliche Entstehung des Werkes zu- rückwies und sagte: "Es zezgt sz'ch vielmehr deutlz'ch, da das Buch aus ver- schz'edenen, oft nur lose unterez'nander verbundenen Teilen zusammengesetzt z'st, dz'e auf verschz'edenen Uberlieferungen oder Handschriften zurückgehen ", Bedauernd fügt B, LAUFER dann die Bemerkung an: "Leider verfügen wir noch nicht über eine eingehende kritische Analyse dieser einzelnen Bestand- tez'le"3 - die Quellenlage war zu Beginn unseres Jahrhunderts nicht ausrei- chend. In den darauffolgenden Jahrzehnten wurden weitere Kapitel eines mongo- lischen Erzählzyklus über Geser Khan bekannt.
