Das Vorkommen fiktionaler direkter Reden ist für den modernen Leser das wohl auffallendste Merkmal antiker Geschichtswerke. Diese Arbeit untersucht die rhetorische Gestaltung und die narrative Funktion der aus dem Epos übernommenen Reden bei Herodot und Thukydides. Ausgehend von der für die antike Historiographie als unzulänglich erwiesenen Unterscheidung von Dichtung und Geschichtsschreibung in Aristoteles' Poetik, den Reden im Epos und der modernen Narratologie, werden durch die umfassende und systematische Analyse der direkten und indirekten Reden im Xerxes-Feldzug und in der Sizilischen Expedition formale und inhaltliche Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Historikern im Gebrauch der Reden herausgearbeitet. Als ihre Hauptfunktionen werden die Dramatisierung der Handlung, die Charakterisierung der handelnden Figuren und Staaten und die indirekte Deutung und Kommentierung des Geschehens durch den Historiker erkannt. Diese Erkenntnisse bilden die Basis für den Vergleich mit Polybios und der modernen Historiographie, in der zwar keine fiktionalen direkten Reden mehr vorkommen, in der aber die neu belebte Debatte zwischen narrativer Geschichte und Strukturgeschichte durch die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung bereichert werden kann.
