Getting a Life was written for recovering alcoholics who want to start working on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous but aren't sure how to go about it. Formerly a daily drinker, the author is a recovering alcoholic who has been sober for over 30 continuous years.

The beginning of any journey or lifestyle change can be overwhelming. This little book offers practical strategies and gentle guidance in the challenging transition from addiction to sobriety.

Exercises at the end of each chapter provide a framework that allows the reader to review each Step and apply the information in the text to his or her own life.

Goals of the book:

*to offer hope and practical help to people just coming into the AA Program

*to shorten the time required for newcomers to enjoy the gifts of a sober life

*to walk through the Twelve Steps using straight-forward language that both women and men can relate to

*to demonstrate that the Twelve Steps can be used to overcome a variety of other addictions as well as alcoholism

*to address newcomers' frequently-asked questions

*to be a guide for sponsors who want to help their sponsees work the Steps

*to give concrete examples for working each Step

*to provide additional support, especially for Steps four, six and seven

J, Hope: - Hope J. has been an educator at all levels of instruction, teaching children, troubled teens and adults. An intrepid solo traveller, she lived and worked in Asia, and backpacked through Europe and Down Under. Before joining AA, the author had changed her name to Hope because she didn't have any. Hope gives all credit for her improved and happy life to Alcoholics Anonymous and the Twelve Steps that comprise the foundation of the Program. Along with alcohol, the author has used the Twelve Steps to help her beat problems with overspending, overeating, and workaholism. She has been sober for thirty years and offers her book as a way to give back to the Program that saved her life.
