C'è un alone di mistero che aleggia su un nome ricorrente tra gli autori dei libri raccolti nel Nuovo Testamento, quello di Giovanni.

L'evangelista, il discepolo che Gesù amava, è Giovanni di Zebedeo, l'apostolo, fratello di Giacomo, come da principio la Chiesa ha sempre creduto? Oppure si tratta di un altro testimone diretto, vicinissimo a Gesù, ma fuori dalla cerchia ristretta degli apostoli, come emerge in buona parte della critica più recente? L'autore del Vangelo è uno solo ed è effettivamente identificabile in una persona, o ciò che ci è giunto con la sua firma è una sorta di opera collettiva, espressione di una comunità particolare? E poi: l'autore delle tre Lettere, il presbitero Giovanni, è lo stesso del Vangelo? E il profeta Giovanni dell'Apocalisse - l'unico testo tra questi in cui compare esplicitamente per quattro volte il nome dell'autore - in che relazione è con chi ha scritto il Vangelo e le Lettere?

Ci sono insomma tante domande aperte, alcune delle quali resteranno tali, senza che questo tolga valore e credibilità a questi testi chiave per la fede cristiana. Anche questo ci ha convinto a raccogliere, nel 26 volume della nostra collana monografica Accènti, alcuni saggi sul quarto Vangelo e sull'Apocalisse, con un riferimento alle tre Lettere in una delle recensioni della ricca Appendice.

Senza poter e voler giungere a conclusioni su un dibattito storico-esegetico che, come risulta evidente, non è terminato, il filo rosso del volume GIOVANNI nel solco della più antica tradizione, è dunque semplicemente il nome.
