Der Gedanke, die Eigenschaften hochpolymerer Stoffe durch Zugabe faserartiger Fullstoffe zu verbessern, ist nicht neu. Schon sehr fruh- zeitig wurden Phenolharz-PreBmassen durch Cellulose-, Holz-und Ge- webeschnitzel oder Asbestfasern verstarkt. Die HersteHung von Hart- geweben und verwandten Schichtstoffen beruht auf demselben Grund- gedanken. Ebensowenig neu ist die Verwendung von Polyesterharzen, die man als Alkydharze oder Glyptale besonders in der Lackindustrie seit vielen Jahrzehnten benutzt, oder als Weichmacher fur Kunstkautschuk und Polyvinylchlorid. Urn so uberraschender kam die spontane technische Entwicklung der glasfaserverstiirkten Kunststoffe (GFK), die 1941 mit dem Eintritt Amerikas in den 2. Weltkrieg einsetzte. Dabei wurden ausgenutzt: die hohen Festigkeitswerte feiner Glas- gespinste ebenso wie die niedrige Temperatur bei der Hartung von ungesattigten, hochmolekularen Estern. Diese spalten bei der Bildung von Makromolekulen nicht - wie die bisher ublichen hartbaren Kunst- stoffe - Wasser bzw. Ammoniak ab und konnten somit bei wesentlich niedrigeren Verarbeitungsdrucken eingesetzt werden, ja, man lernte schnell, sie drucklos zu polymerisieren. Dabei entstanden elektrisch hochwertige Produkte hoher Festigkeit und von vergleichsweise niedrigem spezifischem Gewicht. Zur Entwicklung der Rohmaterialien, der Fertigungsverfahren und geeigneter Fertigprodukte standen wahrend des 2. Weltkrieges in USA nahezu unbegrenzte Geldmittel zur Verfiigung. Auftraggeber waren die Wehrmachtsteile, vor aHem die Luftwaffe. Fur den zivilen Sektor reichten die fabrizierten Rohmaterialmengen nicht aus. Dementspre- chend stagnierte die Entwicklung in USA nach AbschluB des 2. Welt- krieges, so daB die meisten der harzerzeugenden Firmen ihre Fabrikation stillegten.
