About The Book

This is the true story of my first year in the Middle East. I had just run away from a failing relationship in California and somehow, I still can't quite remember how, I ended up in Kuwait teaching at this posh Arab school. The story is about the hilarious times I had teaching the wonderful rich kids of A'Takamul School contrasted with the poor Arab family who adopted me and helped keep me barely sane. Emad, the father, became my friend and it was when it was revealed to me that he was Bedoon that I took up the cause of these persecuted people: pariahs living in the richest country in the world. My battles with the government, the royal family and the school authorities while relying on the protection of the very kids I was teaching lead to many hilarious situations...my escapades with Emad led to many more. All set to the backdrop of me running an illegal ballroom dancing club: Dancing in the Dark!
All the weird and wonderful things that happened to me that are related here are true though you won't believe that. But the places, buildings, people and attitudes are entirely accurate. As are the conversations: I often have difficulty in remembering what day or month it is but I seem to be able to recall conversations with ease.
In my third year when my new wife and I finally had to abandon everything and flee Kuwait just ahead of the police I fought back by releasing a novel entitled: Dancing in the Dark which was about the Bedoon. This was a novel but those of you who have read it will recognise some of the scenes from the school that I have retold in this true version...I found it impossible to create characters, situations or the humour and charm that in any way would rival those that I met every day at A'Takamul School.
