Die neue Auflage bleibt der zweifachen Funktion des Buches - Studiengrammatik für den akademischen Unterricht und Referenzwerk für die Forschung - verpflichtet; sie wendet sich gleicherma en an Germanisten wie an Indogermanisten. Zwei Ziele standen im Vordergrund: klare und lückenlose Präsentation der Fakten, umfassende Dokumentation der Forschung unter Einbeziehung der Sprachgeschichte. In formaler Hinsicht hat der Band eine gründliche Überarbeitung erfahren, vor allem die Zitierweise wurde vereinheitlicht und transparenter gestaltet. Inhaltlich ist die Grammatik aktualisiert und an den derzeitigen Stand der Forschung herangeführt worden. In der Einleitung war auf Neufunde, neue Editionen und neue Erkenntnisse über die Sprachdenkmäler hinzuweisen. Die Lautlehre wurde von überholten Ansätzen befreit und durch Übersichten zum Phoneminventar ergänzt. In der Flexionslehre wurden zahlreiche Abschnitte differenzierter behandelt. Generell wurde angestrebt, grammatische Phänomene anhand tatsächlich belegter Formen zu exemplifizieren. Wo es der Platz zulie , werden für seltenere Erscheinungen nicht wie bisher nur Beispiele, sondern sämtliche Belege gebucht. Lesestücke und Wörterverzeichnis wurden überprüft und neugestaltet. Um die Orientierung in dem historisch gewachsenen Buch zu erleichtern, ist dem Band ein Sachregister beigegeben worden.
