Der Herausgeber Michel Sennelart vereint die dreizehn Vorlesungen mit dem Titel "Sicherheit, Territorium, Bevölkerung" mit den zwölf im Jahr darauf folgenden Vorlesungen "Die Geburt der Biopolitik". Die beiden Bände erhalten den Titel "Geschichte der Gouvernementalität". Die Vorlesungen aus den Jahren 1978 und 79 liefern nicht nur die in seinen frühen und mittleren Schriften vermisste Theorie des Staates. Auch bieten die Überlegungen zur Gouvernementalität den Übergang zwischen einer zwingenden Macht, die die Individuen nur verfertigt, und einer solchen, die in den Kontext des Regierens gerückt und durch ein Gerechtwerden der Selbstkonstitution des Subjekts Spielraum für Möglichkeiten der "Freiheit" oder des Widerstands gegen Zustände von Herrschaft bietet. In dieser Arbeit werden Foucaults Überlegungen zur Gouvernementalität und sein Argumentationspfad besonders anhand der 25 Vorlesungen von 1978 und 1979 vorgestellt und nachvollzogen. Was ist die Gouvernementalität? Welche Komponenten haben sich zu einem so komplexen Gefüge wie dem modernen Staat verdichtet? Welche Techniken des Regierens haben sich seit dem Mittelalter oder sogar seit der Antike entwickelt? Und schlie lich diskutiert die Arbeit besonders den Stellenwert des "Subjekts" in Foucaults Werk. Was ist ein Subjekt bei Foucault? Welche Freiheiten hat das Individuum, wenn Foucault eine "Genealogie des Subjekts" schreibt und dieses als autonome Instanz auflöst beziehungsweise nur als ein Resultat des "Au en" ansieht? Und welche Verbindung gibt es zwischen dem Subjekt und der Gouvernementalität?
