Der reale Grabraub hatte bis in die heutige Zeit zum einen mit dem blanken Überleben der ärmeren Bevölkerungsschichten Ägyptens und zum anderen mit den reichsten Schichten der damaligen und der heutigen Gesellschaft zu tun. "Wer in dieser 5000 Jahre alten Branche tätig war, konnte entweder reich werden oder sterben." schrieb Peter Ehlebracht in seinem Bestseller "Haltet die Pyramiden fest". Diese Arbeit versucht in einer allgemeinhistorischen Übersicht dem ägyptischen Grabraub wissenschaftlich näher zu kommen. In der allgemeinhistorischen Übersicht werden mögliche Plünderungsgründe an exemplarischen Beispielen beschrieben. Zu bedenken ist hier, dass es keine vollständige Beispielhaftigkeit geben kann. Weiterhin werden Sicherheitsma nahmen genannt, welche unter anderem auch regelmä ig die Phantasie der Belletristikautoren anregten. Das Phänomen der Massenplünderungen am Ende des zweiten Jahrtausend vor Christus, sowie die augenscheinlich bedeutenden Grabbeigaben von Tutanchamun werden ebenfall in dieser Arbeit untersucht.
