About The Book

Dans cet ouvrage, j'ai développé un fragment de grammaire qui rend compte des propriétés majeures de deux constructions elliptiques (auxquelles manque la tête verbale), appelées respectivement gapping (1a) et relatives sans verbe (1b), abrégées RSV. Les deux constructions ont été choisies pour montrer qu'une analyse uniforme (sans reconstruction syntaxique) est disponible dans les deux types de relations syntaxiques: coordination et subordination. (1) a. Jean aime les pommes [et Marie les bananes]. b. Plusieurs personnes sont venues cette semaine, [dont Marie (hier)]. La proposition centrale défendue ici est que les phrases elliptiques dans les coordinations à gapping et les subordonnées relatives sans verbe ne peuvent pas être alignées sur le fonctionnement d'une phrase verbale or- dinaire. Leurs propriétés syntaxiques et sémantiques montrent qu'elles ne sont pas dérivées à partir d'une phrase complète. Une analyse en ter- mes de reconstruction syntaxique est donc inadéquate. Par conséquent, la phrase elliptique dans les deux types de structures mentionnés comporte un mode d'organisation syntaxique spécifique et doit avoir un statut in- dépendant dans la grammaire, à savoir le statut d'une phrase fragmentaire, c.-à-d. une unité syntaxique qui a un contenu de type message, mais dont la syntaxe est incomplète. Cet ouvrage apporte de nouveaux arguments en faveur d'une reconstruction plutôt sémantique avec des contraintes de parallélisme, cf. Ginzburg & Sag (2000); Culicover & Jackendoff (2005).

About The Author

Gabriela Bîlbîie studied Romanian and French Linguistics and Literature at the University of Bucharest, completing her studies with a MA and a PhD in Theoretical Linguistics at Université Paris Diderot - Paris 7. Since 2006, she has taught Linguistics in several Parisian universities (Paris 4, Paris 7, Paris 10, and Paris 13). After being granted a postdoctoral research fellowship within the Labex - Empirical Foundations of Linguistics project (PRES Sorbonne Paris-Cité) on experimental syntax and ellipsis, she is currently a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Bucharest working on a research project that investigates null complements in Romanian from a cross-linguistic perspective. Her research interests include syntax and its interfaces (in particular semantics and discourse) and corpus linguistics. She is particularly interested in ellipsis phenomena, coordination, and subordination. She mainly works on Romanian and French, adopting a larger comparative perspective (with other Romance, Slavic, and Balkanic languages).
