Dieser kleinen Einheit von Worten wurde lange Zeit wenig bis keine Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Für den seltenen Fall, dass sie innerhalb der Germanistik Beachtung fanden, waren sie eher negativ konnotiert. Eisenberg bezeichnete die Modalpartikel als "Zaunkönige" oder gar als "Läuse im Pelz der deutschen Sprache", die keine grammatische Funktion besitzen. Auch heute noch gelten Modalpartikeln allgemein als Füllwörter, die genutzt werden, um unschöne Pausen im Redefluss zu stopfen. Werden beispielsweise in einem Referat wiederholt die Modalpartikel "ja", "eben" oder "halt" verwendet, wird dies in der Regel bemängelt und man wird darauf hingewiesen, beim nächsten Mal auf die Lückenfüller zu verzichten. Der Autor untersucht hierfür folgende Fragestellungen: Wie lassen sich Modalpartikeln definieren und welche syntaktischen Eigenschaften haben sie? Was ist Grammatikalisierung und wie läuft diese ab? Gibt es bereits hier schon Hinweise darauf, dass Modalpartikeln einen Grammatikalisierungsprozess durchlaufen? Wenn es einen Grammatikalisierungsprozess gibt, wo genau liegt die grammatische Funktion von Modalpartikeln? Kann man Modalpartikeln in die Klasse der grammatischen Zeichen einordnen?
