Dans Graziella, le narrateur raconte, � la premiere personne, un voyage de jeunesse en Italie: d'abord Rome, puis Naples, au d�but du r�gne de Murat, dans un contexte d'ins�curit� sur les routes (attaque du courrier, brigands, mentions de Fra Diavolo). A Naples, il m�ne une vie contemplative faite de promenades sur les bords et sur les flots du golfe, avant de s'embarquer avec son ami pour apprendre la vie de marin aupr�s d'un p�cheur. Une nuit de mer, la barque affronte une temp�te et l'equipage doit aborder l'ile de Procida, ou le p�cheur retrouve sa maison familiale. Le r�cit s'attarde sur la vie simple de cette famille de p�cheurs: la cabane, le jardin, les enfants, et surtout Graziella, jeune fille du foyer. Progressivement, le narrateur s'attache a cette presence quotidienne. A Naples, la grand-mere l'invite a quitter sa chambre de voyageur pour habiter chez eux, afin de partager la vie du "nid" familial; il accepte. Le texte d�crit aussi le travail de Graziella: un oncle l'enr�le dans l'artisanat du corail lie aux demandes de luxe en Europe, et elle fa�onne a la maison des pieces qu'elle scie, polit et tourne, tandis qu'un cousin vient contr�ler son ouvrage et lui donner des le�ons de lecture, d'�criture et de calcul. Mais cette p�riode est bris�e par l'appel de la famille: un soir, l'ami du narrateur revient avec une lettre de sa mere et l'oblige a partir sans d�lai. Le narrateur �crit a Graziella, lui laisse sa bourse, glisse le billet sous la porte, et la scene de separation se conclut par l'�vanouissement de la jeune fille sur la terrasse. Plus tard, le souvenir se fixe en confession et en deuil: le narrateur �voque une jeune fille "seize ans" et "bien tot pour mourir", puis place ce souvenir au coeur d'un po�me, Le Premier Regret, attache a une plage et a une pierre fun�raire.
