Sollte ich mich an den engen Kreis der Fachgenossen wenden? An den weiteren der Musikfreunde? An den gro en aller künstlerisch Interessierten? Als Antwort hierauf möchte ich einen Ausspruch Griegs (vgl. S. 166) variieren: Ich habe mich mit etwas altmodischer Beschaulichkeit in die Mitte dieser drei konzentrischen Kreise gesetzt. Das Rennen auf den Peripherien mache ich nicht mit. Vielleicht darf ich hinzufügen, da mein Buch nicht für diejenigen geschrieben ist, die nur ein sportliches Interesse an der Kunst haben. Für sie hat auch Grieg seine Musik nicht geschaffen; da sie trotzdem in kurzer Zeit eine so überaus weite Verbreitung fand, wunderte ihn oft. Es wäre mir nicht unangenehm, wenn meiner gleichfalls einige erfreuliche Überraschungen warteten; und klänge es nicht unbescheiden, so würde ich den Leser an die Schlu worte des Königs im Don Carlos erinnern: "Ich habe das Meinige getan. Tun Sie das Ihre.\" [...] Edvard Grieg (1843 - 1907) war ein norwegischer Komponist und Pianist. Detailliert zeichnet Richard H. Stein das Lebens des gro en Künstlers nach. Hierzu geht Stein zurück bis zu den Vorfahren Griegs, bevor er Jugend und Werdegang Griegs beschreibt. Neben der persönlichen Entwicklungsgeschichte Griegs legt Stein in einem zweiten Teil zudem einen besonderen Fokus auf das musikalische Schaffen des berühmten Komponisten, wodurch ihm mit seiner Biographie ein äu erst vielschichtiger Blick auf Edvard Grieg gelingt.
