Besonderes Interesse gilt traditionsgemä den lyrischen, weniger den dramatischen Werken oder der Prosa. dieser Zeit. Betrachtet man die bevorzugten Themenkomplexe der expressionistischen Literatur, so fallen neben Motiven wie Krieg oder Liebe zahlreiche Gedichte namhafter Expressionisten, wie z.B. Heym, Wolfenstein oder Lichtenstein, auf, die das Phänomen der Gro stadt thematisieren. Die Stadt als literarischer Gegenstand erfreute sich schon seit dem Spätmittelalter gro er Beliebtheit, jedoch lässt sich um 1900 ein Umbruch in der Darstellung der Stadt feststellen, hervorgerufen durch veränderte Wahrnehmungen und Empfindungen der Lyriker. Es entstanden nun Gedichte, die sich von naturalistischer Stadtlyrik deutlich abheben. Ausgelöst wurde dieser Umbruch durch wissenschaftliche, technische, ökonomische Veränderungen, vor allem wahrnehmbar in Form der zunehmenden Industrialisierung und der damit einhergehenden Urbanisierung ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die vorliegende Arbeit gibt zunächst einen knappen Überblick über den historischen Kontext des Expressionismus von der Reichsgründung 1871 bis etwa 1900. Schwerpunktmä ig sollen aber weniger die politischen Geschehnisse, als vielmehr wichtige Stationen der Entwicklung von Wissenschaft, Technik und Wirtschaft, und der Urbanisierung auf dem Weg zur Gro stadt behandelt werden, da deren Kenntnis unumgänglich erscheint für das Verständnis der expressionistischen Literatur. Des Weiteren soll die Entwicklung des Stadtmotivs vom Mittelalter bis zum Expressionismus knapp skizziert werden sowie die wichtigsten Aspekte des Gro stadtmotivs in Texten expressionistischer Dichter: Kritik an Technik und Zivilisation, die Gro
