In Growing Up Youngest, Doris Altman Schwartz enchants readers with her tales of growing up as the youngest of eleven children raised by a widowed mother whose husband, the successful portrait painter Solomon Altman, died of pneumonia soon after Doris was born. The culture of London Doris describes during the 1920s, the family's migration to Brooklyn, New York, in the 1930s, and the fortitude of a mother struggling to keep the family together supported only by the meager wages of her older children weave together into a marvelous story.

Doris Schwartz studied art at The Brooklyn Museum with Manfred Schwartz (no relation) for over twenty years. A late bloomer, she received a B.A. from New York State University and an M.S.W. from New York University when she was in her fifties. She worked as a social worker for ten years and was also in private practice. This is Doris' second published book. The first, Doris' Notebook, is a unique presentation of her paintings of beloved objects together with descriptive text and several poems, providing a glimpse of what makes her a remarkable personality. The cover art of a young Doris and her sisters is painted by Ada Altman Weinstock. The book interior and cover is designed by Judith Schwartz.
