Deshalb werden in diesem Buch nur ihre Grund- lagen behandelt. Auf die Darstellung der sch6nen Theorien der Kurven, der Dimension, der Retrakte usw. muBte verzichtet werden; fur sie sei verwiesen auf die in der Bibliographie genannten Werke. Dieser Verzicht war insbesondere auch deshalb erforderlich, weil in diesem Buch - einer gegenwartigen Entwicklungstendenz folgen- die analytisch topologischen Grundbegriffe in groBer Allgemeinheit ent- wickelt werden, was mehr Raum beansprucht, als wenn man von vorn- herein Voraussetzungen macht, die zwar be quem sind, aber der Natur der Sache eigentlich nicht entsprechen. Man kann daruber streiten, ob es zweckmaBig ist, in einem Buch, das auch ein Lehrbuch sein will, eine so groBe Allgemeinheit anzustreben, wie es hier geschieht. Mir scheint jedoch, daB in einem solchen Buch auch Gegenwartstendenzen berucksichtigt werden mussen. Ob und wieweit diese Tendenzen "wichtig" sind, daruber ist heute wohl noch kein Urteil moglich. Der befolgte Grundsatz des Zitierens oder besser Nichtzitierens ist dieser: Nur wenn Begriffe und Satze allgemein unter dem Namen ihrer Urheber bekannt sind, werden diese Namen genannt. Ein genaues Zitieren wurde stets auch zu sagen erfordern, unter welchen spezielleren Voraussetzungen der jeweilige Satz von seinem Entdecker bewiesen wurde und ob und in welchem Umfange der hier dargestellte, den all- gemeineren Voraussetzungen angepaBte Beweis neu ist; dies ware jedoch zu umstandlich.
