Diese Vernetzung verschiedener Wissensgebiete tragt einerseits zur Komplexitat der Bruchforschung bei; andererseits liegt gerade in der interdisziplinaren Wechselwirkung und konstruktiven Synthese der Grund fUr die besondere Attraktivitat des heute hochaktuellen Forschungsgebietes der Bruchmechanik. Der Grund fUr den auBerordentlich raschen Aufschwung der Bruchmechanik in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten ist vor allem in ihrer groBen praktischen Bedeutung fUr die Festigkeitslehre zu suchen. Die Kumulation von katastrophalen Schaden im Flugzeug-, Schiff-, Reaktor- und BrUckenbau infolge Sprodbruchausbreitung bewirkte vor allem in USA in den vergangenen drei Jahrzehnten ein standig wachsendes Interesse an der Erforschung und am Verstandnis der dem Bruchvor- gang zugrundeliegenden physikalischen Prozesse. Dabei entwickelte sich eine neue Disziplin - die Bruchmechanik -, welche groBe Teile der klassischen Fach- gebiete Mechanik, Physik, Metallurgie und Ingenieurwesen umfaBt und in sich vereinigt.
