Die Technik der Nachrichtenübertragung über optische Kabel hat seit dem Beginn der 70er Jahre dank einer weltweiten Forschungs- und Entwicklungsarbeit sehr gro e Fort- schritte gemacht. Triebfeder für die starken Aktivitäten auf diesem Gebiete sind die vie- len technischen und betrieblichen Vorteile, die optische Kabel gegenüber herkömmlichen übertragungsmedien, wie Kupferkabel aller Art, Richtfunk- und Satellitenfunkstrecken, haben. Optische Kabel treten heute nicht nur in erfolgreiche Konkurrenz zu allen bisher üblichen übertragungsmedien, sondern bieten darüber hinaus die Möglichkeit zum Aufbau weltweiter Breitbandkommunikationsnetze, die auf wirtschaftliche Weise mit herkömm- licher Technik überhaupt nicht zu realisieren wären. Einigen wissenschaftlichen Grund- lagen dieser besonders zukunftsträchtigen optischen Nachrichtenübertragungstechnik ist das vorliegende Studienbuch gewidmet. Seit den grundlegenden Arbeiten von J. C. Maxwell ist die Optik als ein wichtiges Anwen- dungsgebiet der Theorie elektromagnetischer Felder und Wellen zu betrachten und darüber hinaus auch als ein legitimes Arbeitsgebiet eines Elektroingenieurs. Das vorliegende Stu- dienbuch ist in diesem Sinne von einem Elektrotechniker für angehende Elektroingenieure geschrieben. Es ist aus Vorlesungen hervorgegangen, die die faseroptische übertragungs- technik als ein modernes und hochaktuelles Anwendungsfeld für die Maxwellsehe Feld- theorie behandeln. Aus diesem Grunde stehen die Ausbreitungsvorgänge optischer Wellen in Lichtwellenleitern im Mittelpunkt der Erörterungen (Kap. 4). Den grundlegenden theoretischen Konzepten der Wellenoptik und der Strahlenoptik, die als wichtigste Werk- zeuge für diese Erörterungen verwendet werden, ist je ein eigenes Kapitel (Kap. 2 bzw. 3) gewidmet. Diese Kapitel unterstreichen den Lehrbuchcharakter des für Studenten geschriebenen Werkes und unterscheiden es von manchen anderen Publikationen.
