Unsere heutigen Erkenntnisse sind das Ergebnis der Lebensarbeit einer stolzen Reihe von Theoretikern und Praktikern, die, um nur einige wenige zu nennen, von THOMAS TELFORD und LOUIS NAVIER tiber ROBERT STEPHENSON, KARL CULMANN, HEINRICH GERBER, OTTO MOHR, FRIEDRICH ENGESSER, WILHELM RITTER, JOSEF MELAN bis zu unseren Zeitgenossen STEPHEN TmOSHENKO und OTHMAR H. AMMANN fUhrt. Vieles von diesen Leistungen ist heute Gemeingut der alltaglichen Konstruktionspraxis geworden und gehOrt damit zu den Grund- lagen, auf denen die Weiterentwicklung des Stahlbaues aufzubauen ist. Der Begriff "Grundlagen des Stahlbaues" ist wohl nicht eindeutig zu urn- reiBen. So gehOren selbstverstandlicherweise Baustatik und Festigkeitslehre, da- mit aber auch Mechanik und Mathematik zu diesen Grundlagen in weiterem Sinne. Die Kenntnis dieser Grundwissenschaften, in dem Umfange wie sie nor- malerweise an technischen Hochschulen gelehrt werden, wird hler vorausgesetzt. Es konnte sich ferner nicht darum handeln, das groBe Gebiet der Metallkunde, die ebenfalls zu den Grundlagen des Stahlbaues gehOrt, umfassend darzustellen, doch sehlen es notwendig, wenigstens diejenigen Erkenntnisse und Tatsaehen festzuhalten, die fUr die Beurteilung des Baustoffes Stahl und seiner Anwendung in Tragwerken unmittelbar notwendig sind. Bei der Darstellung der Verbindungs- mittel und Bauelemente wurde versucht, die Grundsatze der baulichen Aus- bildung nicht nur von der Forderung der gentigenden Sicherheit, sondern auch einer wirtschaftlichen Ausfiihrung aua zu entwickeln.
