Es ist deshalb nicht Aufgabe des Studentenunterrichts, diese Kunst zu vermitteln. Man wird sich im allgemeinen darauf beschranken, einige einfache Pra parate, etwa mit eitrigen Entzundungen, Tumoren und ischa mischen Schadigungen yom Studenten selbst untersuchen zu lassen. Hingegen sollte dieser und ganz besonders der am Nervensystem interessierte Arzt die Entwicklung in diesem Gebiete verfolgen konnen, ahnlich wie er etwa Entwick lungen der Biochemie verfolgen kann, ohne deren Techniken zu beherrschen. Da ein groBer Tell aller neurologischen Krankheiten immer noch nicht behandelt werden kann, ist es eine besonders wichtige Aufgabe des Neuropathologieunter richts, den raschen Fortschritt unserer Einsichten in das krankhafte Geschehen darzulegen und so die Hoffnung auf therapeutische Moglichkeiten zu wecken. Die Wandlung unserer Ansichten ist in der Tat tief: Atiolo gisch und pathogenetisch bisher ratselhafte Prozesse des Ner vensystems werden geklart. Krankheiten, welche bis vor kur zem als "degeaerativ" klassifiziert wurden, sind nachweisbar infektios bedingt. Markscheidendegenerationen erweisen sich als Sphingolipidosen. Leiden, deren Ursprung man bis vor kurzem in der Muskulatur vermutete, haben ihre Ursache vielleicht im Ruckenmark, und die Remyelination im Zen tralnervensystem, vor wenigen Jahren noch als unmoglich erachtet, kann in Gewebskulturen provoziert werden und fin det wohl auch im menschlichen Zentralnervensystem statt."
