About The Author

Edward Dickinson (1853–1946) was an influential American music educator, author, and scholar known for advancing music appreciation and history in higher education. A graduate of Amherst College, he studied at the New England Conservatory and in Berlin, later teaching at the University of Berlin. In 1893, he joined Oberlin College Conservatory, where he developed a respected music history program. Dickinson authored key works such as The Education of a Music Lover and Music in the History of the Western Church. Renowned for his interdisciplinary knowledge, he shaped the academic study of music and was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1911.
