This bilingual haiku anthology features Fugaku sanjū rokkei (Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji), a masterpiece ukiyo-e woodblock print series by Katsushika Hokusai (October 1760-May 1849), which contains one of the most famous ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
As Fugaku sanjū rokkei-consisting of 36 ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the landscape at various locations, each with a view of Mt. Fuji-was published in 1831-1834, it became an instant best-seller so that additional 10 prints were made. Hokusai's striking composition and the use of a blue color (Prussian blue) not only inspired another ukiyo-e painter Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-October 1858) to publish Tōkaidō gojū-san tsugi (The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road, 1833-1834) and his own Fuji sanjū rokkei (Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji, 1852), but also caused a sensation in the French art world in the late 19th century. Consequently, 'Japonism' (Japonisme in French) became a source of inspiration for many Western artists, and Hokusia's work specifically influenced such Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters as Claude Monet (1840-1926), Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), and James McNeil Whistler (1834-1903).
